Tata Group has been responsible for establishing many trusts which have created National institutions in Science and Technology, Medical research etc. Tata Medical Centre (TMC), Kolkata is also such an initiative with the Aim of promoting prevention and treatment for cancer patients. It also focuses on providing early diagnosis and rehabilitation for the patients. India has an increasing prevalence of cancer with approximately 2.5-3 million cases. The Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai have almost 25-30 percent cases from Eastern and North-eastern India, Nepal and Bangladesh. It was with this thought of providing access to best medical facilities for people from this region that Tata Medical Centre Trust (TMCT) was developed in 2005. The hospital has been set up with an Alliance and assistance directly from the Tata memorial Hospital, Mumbai which being the foremost leading national institute with 68 year of experience and expertise in cancer management. The hospital is set up on 13 acres of land at Rajarhat, Kolkata. It is a 167 bedded hospital with 50 percent of its patients receiving free or subsidised treatment for the underprivileged. The hospital is managed by a professional management body which is directly under the TMCT, Kolkata. The chief aim of the Institution is to excel in service, education and research. The hospital has best of medical facilities and well trained staff. The hospital has appointed various disease management teams wherein expertise from different medical streams like surgery, pathology, radiology, radiation and medical oncology, psychiatry and medical social work, work together in formulating treatment protocols with evidence based medical practise signifying the multi-disciplinary approach of the hospital. The hospital plans to start a Telemedicine program with the Tata Memorial hospital centre which would minimise the hardships of the patients and would provide an opportunity to share expert opinions. Considering the patients and their families’ anxieties and agonies in dealing with cancer the hospital also intends to build “Premsharya” an accommodation facility which would provide shelter to 200 patients and 300 family members. Emergency medical care with an on call ambulance would be provided here with medical staff being present round the clock.
