North Coast Trail is a wilderness hiking trail. It is located in Cape Scott Provincial Park on Northern Vancouver Island. The North Coast Trail runs by following beaches and through the forest. The length of the North Coast Trail is 43.1 km. At Nissen Bight 15 km of the trail is linked with the San Josef River. The total length of the trail is 61 km. The North Coast Trail was completed in May 2008. North Coast Trail is further divided into parts. Let’s go through the overview of the North Coast Trail: - Shushartie Bay Compsite to Skinner Creek Campsite: - It is 8.1 km and it takes 5 to 7 hours to complete. This is the most challenging portion of the whole trail. This section of the trail provides sensitive habitats for amphibians, fish and invertebrates. At the Shushartie Bay food cache and Toilet are located but there is no water Source available at this path. There is no tent platform on Shushartie Bay but beach camping is possible there. Skinner Creek Campsite to Nahwitti River Campsite: - This area of the trail is 2.9 km long and takes 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. This section can be hike at low tide because it is dangerous to hike it on high tides. The campsite of this section is four tent platforms, one food cache and a toilet located at Nahwitti River. For water source, the Nahwitti water is used. Nahwitti River Campsite to Cape Sutil Campsite: - The distance from Nahwitti River Campsite to Cape Sutil Campsite is 5 km and it takes 2.5 to 4 hours to reach there. Only 2 people or 270kgs can be move on the platform at a time because ladders to the Cable Car platform are very steep, especially in wet weather. Next portion of the trail is through forest. There are trail markers to identify the path otherwise people can be easily lost in the forest. There are no tent platform available at this section Camping is possible at Cape Sutil. Cape Sutil Campsite to Irony Creek Campsite: - The distance from Cape Sutil Campsite to irony Creek Campsite is 7.8 km and it can be completed in 4 to 6 hours. There is a food cache and a toilet is available in this section. Camping is possible on irony Creek Campsite. Irony Creek Campsite to Laura Creek Campsite: - This section is 11.8 km long and takes 4 to 7 hours to complete. The path from Irony Creek to Laura Creek is predominantly coastal. Camping is possible there with the cable car but not facilities are provided. There is short section to the second cable car crossing located at Stranby River. A food cache and toilet are available at this section. For water, Laura Creek is the only good water source at this section. Laura Creek Campsite to Nissen Bight: - Distance from Laura Creek Campsite to the Nissen Bight Campsite is 7.5 km and 2.5 to 4 hours are taken to complete this section of trail. This is the last section of trail to reach the Nissen Bight Trailhead. The whole trail begins and ends with easy walks. Many sections of the trail are very muddy. A toilet and food cache is located at the western end of the beach. Camping is possible on the entire length of Nissen Bight. The water source is available at the Eastern end of the beach. Nissen Bight to Cape Scott Trailhead: - this section is 15.4 km long and takes 5 to 7 hours to complete. This section is the part of the original Cape Scott trail. There is a food cache and a toilet available at this section. Fisherman River is used as water source there.
