The Kamloops Wildlife Park originally known as the British Columbia Wildlife Park is a zoo of Canada. It was founded on August 16, 1966 by John Moelaert. It is located in Kamloop, British Columbia, Canada and is affiliated by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA).
For the establishment of the zoo, Greater Kamloops Zoological Society, was developed registered under March 31, 1965 Act. The zoo is made on a 106 acres of land which was donated by the owner of the land, Molson's Breweries on February 11, 1966. It was on August 16, 1966, that the zoo was opened for the public for the first time. The construction of the zoo was done with the help of donated services and materials such as water mines, toilet stalls, doors, lumber, flat deck, bulldozer, concrete, labor etc by the business professionals and volunteers.
The donations were mainly from Kamloop area but some other areas like Ontario, Lower Mainland and Peterborough also donated the material and services for the construction of the zoo. The first step in the construction was to drill for the water so that there should be abundant supply of water in the zoo. The society of the park is governed by 14 board of directors which are elected by over 8,000 members at Annual General Meeting. Continuous changes were made in the park with the support of sponsors since 1972 and it was in the year 1987 that the park achieved national status.
