History, and Functions
The United States Forest Service was created in the year of 1876 by the Congress as the office of Special Agent in the Department of Agriculture to check the quality and conditions of the forests located across the United States. Franklin B. Hough was the first forestry agent of the department. The department expanded operational areas in the year of 1881 by establishing a new division under the name “Division of Forestry”. The office of Special Agent in the Department of Agriculture was renamed on 1 February of 1905 as the United States Forest Service following the transfer of
the General Land Office of the Interior Department to the Bureau of Forestry under the Transfer
Act of 1905. The department administers more than 155 national forests and over 20 national grasslands across the United States. The forests and grasslands cover an area of approximately 193 million acres.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service has been divided into nine regions namely, Northern Region, Rocky Mountain, Southwestern Region, Intermountain, Pacific Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Southern, Alaska, and Eastern Region. According to the departmental reports, The United States Forest Service has employed nearly 28,330 permanent and 4,488 seasonal employees to manage the functions.
