The Origins of the company date back to 1904. when George M. Brown gave birth to the General Roofing Manufacturing Company in St. Louis in Missouri. After 13 years, the company renamed as the Certain-teed Products and eventually to Certainteed Corporation in 1976. Since its establishment, the company has acquired various companies including a PVC pipe manufacturer Plains Plastic Inc. in 1965 and Wolverine Technologies in 1988. In 1923, the company added gypsum plaster manufacturing in its business line. The company in 1948 shifted its corporate office to Ardmore, Philadelphia from Chicago. The merger with Gustin-Bacon Manufacturing Company in 1966 helps the company to stronger its presence in industrial and commercial markets with the fiberglass insulation business. In 1970, CertainTeed purchased the assets of Realtec Inc. And as a result, the Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) was created. The Louisiana based PVC plant of the company was named the top safety and environmental performers by Vinyl Institute for nine years in a row. The company's management team and board of directors are the Winners of the Philadelphia Business Journal's 1986 Enterprise Awards. In 1980, Michael Besson became the President and CEO of the company.
