"Academy Sports and Outdoors" came into existence in the year 1938 as "Academy Tire Shop" with the opening of their first store in San Antonio, Texas. In the year 1939 the company started selling military surplus and after working for several years the company changed its business name to 'Academy Super Surplus' in the year 1945. The first store with the name of 'Academy Sports + Outdoors' was opened in the year 1998 in Florida and after that the business reached to heights and never looked back. Since their establishment the company was a privately held company owned by the Gochman family upto the year 2011 and after that it was taken over by investment firm "Kohlberg Kravis
Roberts & Co". The company saw their major expansion during the 1990s when it opened number of outlets in the chain.
